Food Reviews: Fruit 66 (Apple Berry flavor)

http://www.fruit-66.com/

Bought a tiny 87 cent can of this today. There are currently 4 flavors out, and I decided on apple because apples are probably one of my all-time favorite fruits and it's hard for me to dislike anything apple flavored (fuck yeah, green apple jolly ranchers).

I tried it once I got back home and it tastes just like Manzana Lift (apple-flavored soft drink sold in latin american countries, but also in certain shops in the US).

The people behind fruit 66 have something good going with this drink though, as the drink has absolutely no added sugars and uses sparkling water for the fizz effect. You even get your daily vitamin C and 1 whole serving of fruit per can. So anyone trying to get away from soda pop but still want that fizz and flavor--try fruit 66.

Also, follow them on twitter if you can. More people need to know about healthy alternatives to soft drinks! :D

OH GOD HELP IT HURTS

Nothing much happened today really, except for 1 thing:

Since I really wanna go swimming and get a nice tan for the summer, I had to go out and get a wax again. Pardon my language, but SON OF A BITCH.

I hate doing this every year, but I have to unless I want to look like some hairy gorilla.

I went to a local place and paid about $50 for the works (not really gonna say any more than that). There were a few times where I wanted to die right there, but I manned (womaned?) up and made it through.

If any dudes are reading this, know that you have it easy. Unless you're a swimmer or something. If you ever get a wax, take some advil beforehand (and even that won't be totally effective) or you'll cry and squeal like a baby.

I'll end this post with this video:

Acen Craziness

Last night my plane finally arrived in Florida after a connecting flight in Charlotte, North Carolina from the Chicago O'Hare airport. I tried only eating granola bars so I wouldn't be forced to pay $10 for a freaking sandwich, but no matter how many I ate I was still hungry, so I knew that the only way to get rid of the hunger pangs was to spend money on actual food.

Acen was a blast, of course. I went to many different panels and learned lots of things. The game room was a disappointment because all the arcade machines cost money though. :<

I think the most fun I had was at the concerts/raves though. I like to dance a lot so I enjoyed myself there (if I wasn't so tired I would have put more effort into the dancing lol).

I met the nostalgia critic and he signed a bag I bought in the dealers room and I bought tons and tons of manga to read.

I also went to a Japanese marketplace called Mitsuwa and bought some monthly magazines and 2 volumes of Aion along with some Japanese bread. For dinner there I ate a teriyaki tofu burger with cheese curry fries and a yogurt shake. Yum.

I could try to post everything I bought and did at Acen but that would probably take up even more space than I would feel like typing out, so I'll just end this post by saying that I would gladly do this again next year (in fact, I most likely will).

Food Reviews: Quick Milk Magic Straw - Vanilla

So today I went to the local Marsh supermarket in my hometown of Hartford City to stock up on random foodstuffs for my trip to Acen that's coming up in a few days.

Once my dad and I got to the checkout line, I noticed in a bin were these "magic milk straws" that flavor your milk as you drink it with little tiny bead-like things inside the straw.

I found that to be really cool and I liked that it was also low in sugar so I just had to buy some. I opted for the vanilla flavor because vanilla is so underrated. (screw you chocolate milk. Oh, and I'm sorry for betraying you this time strawberry milk)

I didn't drink any milk today, so I figured I'd get my daily calcium by getting out a big plastic cup and fill it up with a little over a cup of milk.

I dipped in the straw and took a sip. Mmm... quite good. The flavor didn't quite kick in too well after the initial sip though. The plain milk kept getting through the straw without being flavored but that's probably because most of the beads lingered at the bottom.

I was disppointed when all the beads went away before I got to finish my milk. I guess I should have gotten a smaller cup.

Still, it was quite delicious. If you see some of these in the store, try them out. It's better for you than getting syrup to flavor your milk. :P

College status: 25% complete

And so ends my first year at Ball State University. I learned a lot in just a year.
So I decided to make a nice (long) list of all the things I learned this year at BSU:

* I learned that college is nothing like high school. You either study or the classes will kick your ass.

* I learned that having friends in college is both a blessing and a curse. You always have tons of fun stuff to do, but your school work will suffer if you don't know when to say 'no' when you have an assignment due.

* I learned that you should always knock before opening a door so as to avoid walking in on your roommate and her boyfriend 'doing it'.

* I learned that skipping classes is a really dumb idea.

* I learned that facebook is life.

* I learned that not having a cellphone is harder than I thought it was.

* I learned that staying up until at least 12am is a requirement to being a college student.

* I learned that when you have some money left on your meal, GET A BILLION CANDY BARS AND NEVER EAT THEM. WATCH AS YOUR CANDY STASH GROWS.

* I learned that the "freshman 15" is a bunch of crap because it's actually possible to eat salad for every meal if you wanted to (but most people don't).

* I learned that Woodworth's food is really awful and stale.

And finally, I learned that college is probably the most awesome time of your life.
Can't wait for next semester! I'll be living with my two friends Marlee and Amanda so it'll be more fun and much easier for me. I'll be taking 3 different languages too, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.

Rather than getting easier, it will be getting harder from here on. But I just have to keep up my grades and I'll be fine.

Well, now I can finally relax and marathon some visual novels I've been meaning to play (Muv Luv, ef, higurashi, kirakira curtain call, edelweiss eiden fantasia... the list goes on)

SEE YA NEXT SEMESTER PEEPS!

Decisions, decisions...

Darn it. There are so many branches and decisions I have to make this summer it's crazy.

First off-- I have to decide whether to take classes over the summer. If I do, I'll have to stay in Indiana for the entirety of July. If I don't, I can get an awesome job at the Hilton in Florida and get some money. On one hand, I can maybe visit Indiana friends and get more college credits (I have 40 credits already), but on the other hand I will make barely any money. (if any)

Secondly, I am going to my second anime convention, Anime Central in Rosemont, IL. I have to decide whether to blow all my $500 there or to save it on some videogames and a Pop'n ASC for later.

Looks like no matter what I choose to do this summer, I'm probably going to end up broke. D:

Review: hi-chew: durian

Sooo I finally got my long-awaited durian flavored hi-chew in the mail from Japan today.

I ordered it off of good old ebay using the (small) amount of ebay bucks I had on my account that I mostly got from spending over $100 on headphones. So basically, I got the candy free of charge. YAY~~ FREE SAMPLE!~~

I know that I've eaten enough today already, but according to my pokewalker, I've walked 15,000 steps just walking through BSU's campus so I figure a few more calories and sugar won't kill me.

In case you have no idea what hi-chew is, it's a Japanese candy that's very similar to Starburst, except that it tastes a whole lot better. This flavor of hi-chew is part of the "World Fruits" series. Basically taking fruits from around the world and making them into hi-chew flavors. Some other kinds were lychee, jackfruit, mango, and probably some others I'm forgetting. But durian caught my eye because... IT'S DURIAN.

I mean, how could they possibly capture the distinctive smell and taste of durian in a candy? Anyone who's ever tasted a durian or smelled a durian in their life would know what I'm talking about.

So I just had to buy it for that reason alone. After eating an actual durian fruit and then eating durian ice cream from an asian market I fell in love with it. Most people probably won't agree with me, but durian is freaking delicious. It tastes like onion pudding. Now I know that sounds nasty, but it works.

So does the durian flavored hi-chew capture that certain flavor I'm looking for?

Well... not exactly.

Upon opening the contents of the package, I find that the candy is white and not yellow. Okey dokey. I smelled the candy, hoping for some rotting odor, but none of that came out. Okay. Now I took just the smallest bite... hmm... yes, this is a familiar taste... ooh, I think the onion part is coming... nope, wait... no... no.

Yeah... this is not durian. It tastes more like lychee.

It doesn't taste awful at least. Just not durian-like. Damn, no onion pudding fun this time.

hi-chew... I am disappoint.

Taking my first steps in Second Life

I took my first little steps in Second Life today. I previously had some trouble getting the program to work on my laptop, but I finally managed to get the program running decently on my 3 year old computer.

I double-clicked the client's icon on my computer desktop and was created with a login screen and the Second Life logo. I put my login info in the boxes and clicked next. I am then greeted by a gratuitous interface containing so many choices I could play around with. Maybe a little more than I could handle at first. However, this qualm soon went away as I played around a little with all the stuff I could do- I could changed my clothes at will, teleport instantaneously to any location I desire in Second Life, or chat with someone nearby.

I thought to myself, "Well, what should I do first? So many choices." Second Life is just like real life in that you have so many choices you can pursue. And choice is good. Freedom is good. Humans desire nothing more than to have complete control over their own lives. Second Life is no exception.

I decided to begin with a change of attire. I wanted to display my own identity in Second Life, and not unlike in real life, I chose clothes that were rather modest but very modern (jeans and a T-shirt. Boring, but it works). However, unlike my real self, I chose to give myself tattoos on my body. I probably will never, ever get a tattoo in real life because of the bad rep tattoos have, but because Second Life doesn't have the same consequences as real life, I chose something more risque.

Tom Boellstorf's book "Coming of Age in Second Life" says that about humans and technology being inseparable. This is quite the case with Second Life. However, the book also mentions how our selves in the "real" world differ from the world in Second Life just a bit. I believe that Second Life isn't truly an extension of one's self. Because one can choose to become anything they want, they could be something that is the opposite of what they are or completely change themselves. One can become a completely different person on Second Life if they so desire. (Boellstorf 63).

I saw a few people wandering around the area I started out in, which seems to be an area all "newbies" start out at. I chatted with a person nearby, and they also commented that it was their first time using Second Life. They just wanted to see what the site was all about apparently. We talked about how Second Life has been talked about as being like an actual "other" world and actually considered one for many people who make money online selling "prims" or other such items within the Second Life economy. The convo went on for a little while after that, but not too long.

"The virtuality of online worlds inheres in their status as places, but it is with regard to time, particularly synchronic sociality, that the actual world intrudes most fundamentally into online culture." (Boellstorf 102).

The above quote demonstrates another thought I had of Second Life as I regard it with other online MMOs I've played. I tend to focus on other hobbies, so Second Life won't be a big part of my life like it is for other people. But despite that, for many, it is life. For me, life is more about video games and books (and I frequently spend more time in them than in the "actual" world). However, like Boellstorf, I do believe that just because I spend a lot of time on my hobbies (pretty much whenever I'm not studying or working) doesn't make it a form of escapism. (26). I do it because I crave information. I want to know about anything and everything and with the Internet, it's all at my fingertips. Second Life could be seen as an enrichment of one's life, not as a form of escapism as well. One can also find out a lot of various information in Second Life or have conversations about profound subjects.

After the chat was over, I chose a spot to teleport to off the island I started out on. I chose a location I thought I would be interested in. In other words, I chose "Japan".

I no more than a few seconds my avatar was now in "Japan", which seemed to be an area with a few shrines and some "Japanese-sounding" music. A bit disappointing. As a Japanese major, I was hoping for something a little more authentic. But I suppose the Japanese don't play Second Life that much.

I decided to leave the area since no one seemed to be around, and moved to another part of Japan. This time, the design was more authentic and it seemed like this particular area was once a spot where you could buy japanese maid cafe uniforms. I say "once was" because the area had absolutely no people there. I checked 2 other places in Japan, "Tokyo" and "Sapporo" but they were both the same deal as the previous two. How I would have liked more activity and more designs but I suppose Second Life isn't as popular as it was a few years ago.

I did find Second Life interesting though. It reminded me a lot of "The Sims", but instead of controlling a "Sim" you control your "Avatar" which is meant to represent yourself.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if I could find more people to communicate with on there. An important element to any online MMO is to be able to enjoy it with other people. Otherwise, there's little fun to be had in the final product.

I want to finish off this post by saying that I believe Second Life is a great idea with great intentions. But perhaps the reason why it seems "abandoned" now is because it was too ahead of its time. Most people then weren't ready to live their lives online. Maybe they aren't even ready now. But I have a feeling someday, a day probably not too far off in the future, another company like Linden Labs will swoop in and take what Second Life started and make it better. And once that day arrives, our very lives will be shaped by how we live them in the digital world.

"...all of us, online and offline, are virtually human." (Boellstorf 249).

New post after god knows how long

So I'm starting up this blog again because Abraham said I should. I guess that as good a reason as any.

So this weekend, I finished the game "Heavy Rain" for PS3. Wow, what a game. (I will use the term "game" lightly, as you press buttons to quick-time events and don't actually get to drive a car or shoot stuff).

My fav character was Jayden, hands down. F-yeah Ari glasses. I want them so much.

Other than that, I watched a few "Let's Play" videos on Youtube. I'm so far behind on Xbox 360 and PS3 games because I just obtained both of these systems only a month ago. So I'm watching videos and buying games up the wazoo. Today and yesterday I watched a few Bioshock and Dante's Inferno videos. Mostly Bioshock because I want to buy the 2nd game.

Oh, and I had an English paper that was due in only 2 hours and needed 4 pages typed. I hadn't started it so I rushed it in and actually finished it. Damn. Didn't expect that.

Since I slept about 12 hours last night, I figure I probably won't sleep til' about 4:00 am. My sleeping patterns are just getting worse. Well, that's all for today. Good ol' boring weekend as usual.
